A Munnar destination wedding is held at a hill resort or a plantation bungalow in Kerala’s tea estates, at about 1,500 metres. Evenings are cool and mornings misty. The best months are October to March. It suits 30 to 150 guests. For 150 guests over three days, expect roughly ₹43.2–93.6 lakh (about US$45,000–98,000), including our planning fee.

## Key facts

- Best months: October to March
- Typical budget: ₹43.2–93.6 lakh (about US$45,000–98,000) for 150 guests, 3 nights, 4-star
- Airports: Cochin International Airport (COK) — About 4 hours by road; Coimbatore International Airport (CJB) — About 4–5 hours by road
- Areas: The tea hills of Idukki: Munnar town, Mattupetty, Pallivasal and Chinnakanal

Munnar is tea country. Estate roads wind through rows of clipped green bushes, and at dawn there’s mist in the valleys. On the skyline is Anamudi, the highest peak in south India. It’s about four hours by road from Kochi airport, so guests who land in the morning are up in the hills by the afternoon. We’re a drive away, in Kochi.

Munnar suits a smaller wedding, and the weather is cool. The resorts are built on the hillsides, with lawns that look out over the estates, and once the sun goes down you’ll be glad of a dining room indoors. The ceremony is on a lawn with the hills behind you, and there’s a bonfire that evening. The next morning is slow, with tea from the estate next door.

## Coming from abroad

Guests from Europe, North America, Australia and the Gulf all fly into Kochi. It has direct flights from the Gulf and one-stop connections from most of the world. From the airport it’s about four hours by road up through the hills. We run cars and small coaches, and plan the drive for daylight. Many couples hold a welcome dinner in Fort Kochi the night before, then everyone goes up together.

| From | How | Time |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Europe, North America, Australia | One stop via the Gulf or Singapore into Kochi (COK), then by road | About 17–26 hours |
| Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha | Direct flights to Kochi, then by road | About 8 hours |
| Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai | Direct domestic flights to Kochi, then by road | 5–7 hours |
| Kochi airport to Munnar | By road through the hills, with our transfers | About 4 hours |
| Madurai or Coimbatore | By road from Tamil Nadu | About 4–5 hours |

## Seasons

| Months | Weather | Our view |
| --- | --- | --- |
| October–November | Clear after the monsoon, 15–25 °C, some evening showers | Green and quiet, and the rates are good. Keep a covered plan in case of showers. |
| December–February | Cool and dry, about 10–22 °C; cold nights | Peak season, with the clearest skies and the busiest weekends. Book 9–12 months ahead and plan somewhere warm for the evenings. |
| March–May | Warm days, 18–28 °C | Still pleasant in the hills while the plains are hot. |
| June–September | Southwest monsoon, heavy rain and mist | Indoor venues only, and the ghat roads, the winding roads up into the hills, are slow. Most couples avoid it. |

## Venue types

- **Hill resorts:** Lawns with valley views and indoor halls for 80–180 guests. There are rooms on site for the whole party.
- **Tea-estate resorts:** Resorts inside working estates, where the ceremony has tea bushes on three sides and the mornings are misty.
- **Plantation bungalows:** Old estate bungalows that you take over whole, for weddings of 20–60 guests.
- **Halls in town:** Convention halls in Munnar town. We use them for larger local weddings, and as the dry plan if it rains.

## Highlights

- **Cool weather:** Evenings in the hills are 10–20 degrees cooler than on the coast. That’s welcome if your guests come from warm cities, and it helps when the sangeet, the night of music and dancing, runs late.
- **Tea on every side:** You can have your portraits taken in the estate rows, and guests can go on a plantation walk. We put tea from the hills in the welcome kit.
- **Mattupetty and Eravikulam:** Between functions, guests can visit the dam and lake at Mattupetty, or Eravikulam National Park to see the Nilgiri tahr, a wild mountain goat.
- **Easy to pair with Kochi:** Start with a welcome dinner in Fort Kochi and hold the wedding in the hills. Guests can finish with a day on the backwaters or at the beach.

## Areas

- **Munnar town and Pallivasal:** The resort belt below the town, closest to the shops and the estate viewpoints.
- **Mattupetty:** The dam and lake road, with resorts above the water. Plan portraits for early morning, when the light is best.
- **Chinnakanal and Suryanelli:** Quieter estates further east, with wide views over the valleys. Add half an hour to the drive.

## Budgets

| Intimate (50 guests, 2 nights, 2 functions) | ₹14.9–29.1 lakh | ₹30–58k |

## Ceremonies

- A Kerala Hindu ceremony is short and set to a muhurtham, an auspicious time chosen from the calendar. It’s often in the morning, which suits Munnar, because the mist lifts by nine and the lawn is still cool.
- Kerala Christian weddings are held in church. There are churches in Munnar town and on the estates around it, and the reception moves to the resort.
- Civil-style and fusion ceremonies are common at the hill resorts. You can open the day the Kerala way, by lighting the nilavilakku, the tall brass lamp.
- Guests from the plains feel the cold on winter evenings. We plan a bonfire and a warm room for dinner, and have shawls ready.

## Rules and permissions

- Amplified music outdoors normally ends at 10 pm. Indoors it can go on later.
- Fireworks and drones are restricted near the estates and the national park. We check with the resort and the local authority before planning either.
- The ghat roads are slow and misty after dark. We move guests in daylight, and the last transfer leaves before sunset.
- Rooms in Munnar are limited in peak season. We block the whole resort early and hold a second one nearby for overflow.

## Questions

### How much does a destination wedding in Munnar cost?

Expect roughly ₹43.2–93.6 lakh (about US$45,000–98,000) for 150 guests over three days at a 4-star hill resort. That covers rooms, food, the venue, décor, photography, music, guest care and our planning fee. A smaller wedding of 50 guests starts far lower, and the cost calculator will work out your own numbers.

### What is the best time of year for a wedding in Munnar?

October to March. December to February has the clearest skies and the busiest weekends, and the nights are cold. October and November are greener and better value, with some evening showers. Avoid June to September, when the monsoon brings heavy rain and mist.

### How do guests get to Munnar?

They fly into Kochi (COK), then it’s about four hours by road. Kochi has direct flights from the Gulf and one-stop connections from Europe, North America and Australia. We run cars and coaches from the airport and plan the drive for daylight.

### How many guests can a Munnar wedding take?

Hill resorts seat about 80–180 guests on their lawns and in their halls, and a plantation bungalow takes 20–60. For more than 200 guests we’d look at Kochi or Kumarakom, or split the weekend between the two.

### Is Munnar cold?

Pleasantly cool in the day, at 15–25 °C for most of the season. From December to February nights can fall to about 10 °C, so we plan a bonfire and an indoor space for dinner, and have shawls ready.

### Can we combine Munnar with the backwaters or a beach?

Yes. Kumarakom, Alleppey and Fort Kochi are three to four hours away. You could hold the welcome dinner in Kochi, then send guests on to the backwaters or the beach after the wedding.

### Can foreigners get legally married in Munnar?

Yes, under India’s Special Marriage Act. You give notice to the local Marriage Officer once one of you has lived in the district for at least 30 days. Most couples from abroad marry legally at home and hold the ceremony in Munnar.

### How far ahead should we book?

Nine to twelve months ahead for December to February, because the hill resorts fill early. For the rest of the season, six months.
