**In short:** A Kerala Hindu wedding is short and timed to the minute. At the muhurtham, the auspicious time, the groom ties the thali around the bride’s neck in front of a lit nilavilakku lamp. Often he gives her a new cloth (pudavakoda) and they exchange garlands. The ceremony can take under half an hour and is followed by a sadya.

## What makes a Kerala Hindu wedding different?

Kerala weddings are known for being simple. Most communities don’t hold days of rituals before the ceremony, and the wedding itself comes down to a few moments done precisely at the muhurtham, the auspicious time. Customs differ between communities, such as Nair, Ezhava and Namboodiri families, so each family adapts what follows.

## The usual order of the day

1. **The welcome.** The groom’s party is received at the venue, often with a thalappoli, where girls or women carry brass plates with lit lamps, rice and flowers. In many families someone also carries an ashtamangalyam, a tray of eight auspicious items.
2. **The setting.** The ceremony takes place on a decorated platform (mandapam) in front of a lit nilavilakku, the tall brass lamp. Beside it stands a nirapara, a wooden measure filled with paddy.
3. **The muhurtham.** At the exact auspicious time, the groom ties the thali, a sacred pendant, around the bride’s neck. This is the heart of the wedding.
4. **Pudavakoda.** In many communities the groom gives the bride a new cloth (pudava). The custom goes back a long way in Kerala.
5. **Garlands and the kanyadanam.** The couple exchange garlands, and in many families the bride’s father places her hand in the groom’s.
6. **Walking together.** The couple often walk around the lamp or the mandapam, receiving blessings as they go.
7. **The sadya.** Every guest is served a vegetarian feast on a banana leaf.

## What do the bride and groom wear?

The bride traditionally wears a cream kasavu saree with a gold border, or a silk saree, with gold jewellery and jasmine in her hair. The groom wears a kasavu mundu, wrapped at the waist, and a melmundu over one shoulder. Many couples change into different outfits for the reception.

## Where do Kerala Hindu weddings take place?

Many are held in temples, and some well-known temples host many weddings on popular dates. Others are in kalyana mandapams (wedding halls) and convention centres, or at the tharavadu, the family’s ancestral home. Destination weddings are increasingly held at lakeside and beach resorts.

## How is the date chosen?

The family astrologer helps choose it, using the couple’s horoscopes and the calendar. Popular muhurtham dates book up months in advance, and many families avoid the month of Karkidakam. Our [muhurtham finder](/muhurat) lists the traditional dates to consider for any year.

## Kerala Hindu, Christian and Muslim weddings compared

## Questions

### How long is a Kerala Hindu wedding ceremony?

Often under half an hour. The central moment, when the groom ties the thali, happens exactly at the muhurtham.

### What is thalikettu?

It’s the moment the groom ties the thali, a sacred pendant, around the bride’s neck. This is the central rite of a Kerala Hindu wedding.

### What do guests wear to a Kerala wedding?

Cream and gold kasavu, silk sarees and mundus are traditional. Guests from abroad are welcome in formal wear.

## Temple weddings and Guruvayur

Many Kerala Hindu couples marry at a temple. The best known is the Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple in Thrissur district, which holds hundreds of weddings on its busiest days. One Sunday in September 2026 it held 420, on six mandapams, starting at 4 am. Entry was limited to 25 people for each wedding party. A temple wedding suits a short ceremony with close family, and the wider celebration and the sadya then happen at another venue.

## Is the ceremony a legal marriage?

For two Hindus, yes. Under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, a Hindu marriage “may be solemnized in accordance with the customary rites and ceremonies of either party”, and the Act also covers Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs. If the rites include the saptapadi, the seven steps, the marriage is complete when the seventh step is taken.

Under the Kerala Registration of Marriages (Common) Rules, 2008, every marriage solemnised in Kerala must be registered, whatever the couple’s religion, unless another law already makes its registration compulsory. You file a memorandum with the Local Registrar of Marriages (Common) within 45 days of the wedding. That’s the registrar of births and deaths at the panchayat, municipality or corporation. You can still register later, but you’ll pay a fine.

## More questions

### Can we get married at Guruvayur temple?

Many Hindu couples do. You book the wedding with the temple, and it’s held on one of the temple’s mandapams. On the busiest day in September 2026, entry was limited to 25 people for each wedding party, so plan the wider celebration at another venue.

### Is a Kerala Hindu wedding legally valid?

For two Hindus, yes. The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 recognises a marriage solemnised by the customary rites of either family. In Kerala you then register it with the local registrar within 45 days.
