**In short:** A Kerala Muslim wedding centres on the nikah, the marriage contract agreed before an officiant and witnesses. As part of it the groom gives the bride a mahr gift. Before the nikah there’s often a mylanchi (henna) night with oppana songs, and afterwards a reception feast, where Malabar biriyani is the best-known dish.

## Before the wedding

- **Mylanchi.** The henna night. Family and friends gather while the bride’s hands are decorated with henna.
- **Oppana.** In Malabar, women sing and clap around the bride in a song and dance of celebration. Mappila songs, the region’s own musical tradition, are often part of the evening.

## The nikah

The nikah is the essential ceremony. It’s a marriage contract, agreed in front of an officiant and witnesses, often at the mosque or a family venue. The mahr, a gift from the groom to the bride, is agreed as part of it. In many Kerala families the groom and the bride’s guardian agree the contract, and the bride gives her consent beforehand. Customs vary between families and communities.

## The reception

After the nikah, the families host a reception, and the groom’s family traditionally hosts a walima feast. Malabar is known for its wedding food, biriyani above all.

## What does the bride wear?

Often a richly embroidered saree or lehenga, with gold jewellery and a matching head covering, which in Malabar is called a thattam.

## Planning tips

- Weddings aren’t usually held during Ramadan.
- Brief the venue and caterers on halal food, and on separate seating if the families would like it.
