Munnar destination weddings

A tea-estate wedding in the cool hills, four hours from Kochi.

Tea plantations at Mattupetty, Munnar

A Munnar destination wedding is held at a hill resort or plantation bungalow among the tea estates of Kerala, at about 1,500 metres, with cool evenings and misty mornings. The best months are October to March. It suits weddings of 30 to 150 guests. For 150 guests over three days, expect roughly ₹43.2–93.6 lakh (about US$45,000–98,000) with MarryLoom planning it end to end.

Munnar is tea country: estate roads winding through clipped green bushes, mist in the valleys at dawn, and Anamudi, the highest peak in south India, on the skyline. It is about four hours by road from Kochi airport, so guests who land in the morning are in the hills by the afternoon, and the planning team is a drive away.

A Munnar wedding is a small, cool-weather wedding. Resorts here are built on hillsides, with lawns that look over the estates and dining rooms that are welcome once the sun goes down. Couples come for a ceremony with the hills behind it, a bonfire evening, and a slow morning with tea from the estate next door.

Why couples choose it

What makes a Munnar wedding special

  • Cool weather

Evenings in the hills are 10–20 degrees cooler than the coast: welcome for guests from warm cities and for a sangeet that runs late.

  • Tea on every side

Portraits in the estate rows, a plantation walk for guests, and tea from the hills in the welcome kit.

  • Mattupetty and Eravikulam

The dam and lake, and the national park with its Nilgiri tahr, for a guest outing between functions.

  • Pairs with Kochi

A welcome dinner in Fort Kochi, the wedding in the hills, and a backwater or beach day to finish.

Coming from abroad

Getting your guests to Munnar

Guests from Europe, North America, Australia and the Gulf fly into Kochi, which has direct Gulf flights and one-stop connections from most of the world. From the airport it is about four hours by road through the hills; we run cars and small coaches, and plan the drive in daylight. Many couples hold a welcome dinner in Fort Kochi the night before and move everyone up together.

Ceremonies, customs and local rules

Ceremonies

  • Kerala Hindu ceremonies are short and set to a muhurtham, often in the morning, which suits Munnar: the mist lifts by nine and the lawn is cool.
  • Kerala Christian weddings take place in church; Munnar town and the estates around it have churches, and the reception moves to the resort.
  • Civil-style and fusion ceremonies are common at hill resorts. Lighting the nilavilakku, the tall brass lamp, opens the day in the Kerala way.
  • Plan shawls, a bonfire and a warm dinner space for winter evenings; guests from the plains feel the cold.

Rules and permissions

  • Amplified music outdoors normally ends at 10 pm; indoor spaces can run later.
  • Fireworks and drones are restricted near the estates and the national park; we ask the resort and the local authority before planning either.
  • The ghat roads are slow and misty after dark, so we move guests in daylight and keep the last transfer before sunset.
  • Rooms in Munnar are limited in peak season: we block the whole resort early and keep a second resort nearby for overflow.

Munnar wedding questions

How much does a destination wedding in Munnar cost?

For 150 guests over three days at a 4-star hill resort, expect roughly ₹43.2–93.6 lakh (about US$45,000–98,000), including rooms, food, venue, décor, photography, music, guest care and our planning fee. Intimate weddings of 50 guests start far lower; use the cost calculator for your own numbers.

What is the best time of year for a wedding in Munnar?

October to March. December to February is the clearest and busiest, with cold nights; October and November are greener and better value, with some evening showers. Avoid June to September, when the monsoon brings heavy rain and mist.

How do guests get to Munnar?

Fly into Kochi (COK), which has direct Gulf flights and one-stop connections from Europe, North America and Australia, then about four hours by road. We run cars and coaches from the airport and schedule the drive in daylight.

How many guests can a Munnar wedding take?

Hill resorts seat about 80–180 guests on their lawns and halls, and plantation bungalows take 20–60. For more than 200 guests we look at Kochi or Kumarakom, or split the weekend between the two.

Is Munnar cold?

Pleasantly, in the day: 15–25 °C for most of the season. Nights from December to February can fall to about 10 °C, so we plan shawls, a bonfire and an indoor dinner space.

Can we combine Munnar with the backwaters or a beach?

Yes. Kumarakom, Alleppey and Fort Kochi are three to four hours away, so couples often hold the welcome dinner in Kochi and send guests to the backwaters or the beach after the wedding.

Can foreigners get legally married in Munnar?

Yes, under India’s Special Marriage Act, which requires notice to the local Marriage Officer after one partner has lived in the district for at least 30 days. Most couples from abroad marry legally at home and hold their ceremony in Munnar.

How far ahead should we book?

Nine to twelve months for December to February, when the hill resorts fill early, and six months for the rest of the season.
